George Soros’ Amazing $18B Gift Makes History & Will Change Lives Around the World

According to a recent article published in the New York Times, the recent donation of more than $18B by George Soros to the Open Societies Foundations is the largest transfer of wealth by a single donor to a single philanthropic foundation in history. The popular activist, well-known democratic party donor, and famous hedge fund manager, made the gift quietly over a period of a few years, but did not disclose the action in full until recently.

The gift, which now puts the Open Societies Foundations in position as the second largest philanthropic foundation in the United States, only surpassed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, according to a Forbes Magazine piece. Already the gift is making positive waves in areas where Open Societies works around the globe. The act, however, does place Soros, already known as a controversial figure for his outspoken nature political activism for liberal agendas, at the center of a new round of social and political divisiveness in the country. Soros, however, has never been the kind of man to let controversy prevent him from doing good in the world and he isn’t about to start now.

The Open Societies Foundations is a non-profit founded by Soros more than 30 years ago and is based on a concept that he grew to admire when he was very young. From his time as a young man Soros has been an admirer of the Work of Karl Popper the philosopher, and a man who during World War II developed a modern workable concept of open societies and how they should function for the betterment of all of mankind. It was in the spirit of Popper’s work that Soros founded the Open Societies Foundations which is committed to the non-violent development of democracy and the expansion of basic human rights for all peoples in more than 120 countries around the globe. In the United States Open Societies works closely with other groups to help protect the rights of GLBT people and to reduce the incidences of police abuse toward minorities.

These are items which are of special consideration to Soros. He was born in Hungary and lived in Budapest during the Nazi occupation in WWII. He was a Jew trapped in a city that was being overrun by a political sect that wanted to kill his entire people, and yet, despite the atrocities that he was surrounded by he maintained his strength and dignity. After he was able to flee the country in the aftermath of the war, he moved to London and began his long and successful career in finance. He then moved to the United States and as his wealth grew, and he became more and more respected as a financier he began to develop an overwhelming sense of service. He wanted to take the blessings that he had been given and use them to help others. He wanted to do what he could to help ensure that oppression and discrimination never again were allowed to run rampant as they had in his home country during the war. He started Open Societies in order to help the world grow in democracy and peace, so that all people could prosper and reach their ultimate potential and more information click here.
